Erotic Romance Flash Fiction

Erotic Romance Flash Fiction
Inside Jolie's Head - 4/8/2007
Flash fiction is fiction characterized by its extreme brevity, as measured by its length in words. While there is no universally accepted exact word limit, generally a short story is considered to constitute flash fiction if it is less than 1,000- 2,000 words long, and most flash-fiction pieces are between 250 and 1,000 words long. (By contrast, "traditional" short stories range from 2,000 words to upwards of 20,000, and are mainly between 3,000 and 10,000 words long; they are distinguished from longer forms, such as the novel and novella, primarily by the intent that they be read in a single sitting.)

I became interested in Flash Fiction because of my association with ERWA. Every Sunday, members post 200 word or less flashers (flash fiction) for reading and critiques. I write flash fiction because they give me practice for writing tight. I prefer 100 word or less flashers because they help me do that even more. Flash fiction pieces are complete stories and every word needs to contribute to the story.

Nomia left Mozambique, yet the Portuguese flew from her lips when she returned. Her skin, like rich espresso, blended with the others, where mine was spoiled with cream. Why was I here? My Africa was history books, not sentiment.
During the day we couldn't kiss outside like we do in San Francisco, but we held hands under the sun. Then at night, in our hotel, we lay naked and close. Nomia touched my breasts as I trailed slow kisses down her neck.
"Jenise, are you okay now?"
The next day, as I gazed at the ocean, I realized I was.

Loris at my door, wet from the rain, but like an artist splattered with paint she doesnt mind. Inside we eat her bag of M&Ms and drink my herbal tea.
Are you gonna let me stay the night? she asks.
No. Youre an 18-year-old girl and Im a 44-year-old woman. How many times have I said it?
She throws the empty candy bag on the coffee table and storms outside, leaving my door open. I close it. Removing the tea cups, I try not to think about the scent of her hair or the sway of her hips.

Sienna threw on her clothes and rushed out of the bedroom, said she was late for an appointment. She was rail-thin with grayish skin, sunken eyes and flat breasts that once were full, but Gina loved her. When she had kissed Siennas body she tried to ignore the track marks on the back of her legs.
There was a time when Sienna was clean, made money, surprised Gina with a diamond necklace. But that was before.
Then Gina jumped out of bed and ran to her jewelry box. It was just a feeling, yet sure enough, the necklace was gone.

Fabulous Jolie! I've always been curious about writing flash fiction but I've never had the guts to give it a try. It seems so much more disciplined than other forms because, as you said, it requires tight writing.
I think everyone can use a little practice at writing tight. I haven't thought about this in awhile so maybe it is time for me to give it a shot.
Cheers,
Autumn
Hi Autumn,
Thanks!
Even though I'm busy with other writing, I post a flasher a week at ERWA simply for the practice of writing tight. It has helped with my other stories.
Give flashers a shot. They're fun to do too.
